Castle Employment celebrates successful year with 50th Anniversary celebrations and fundraising

Castle Employment, an award winning employment agency operating in Scarborough, York and Leeds, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary following two years of expansion. To celebrate, the team held a grand Summer Party for staff, customers and suppliers on the evening of their anniversary on 3rd August. The Castle team are also involved in many fundraising events throughout the year with a target to raise over £5000 for Scarborough based charity St Catherine’s Hospice.

With the head office still occupying the original building in Scarborough, Castle has grown from a small secretarial recruitment business to a large multi-specialist agency providing temporary and permanent staff for businesses across the Yorkshire region.  Over the last two years, Castle has expanded to York and Leeds and undergone a period of significant growth, doubling its staff numbers and its turnover to £3.5 million.

Managing Director, Suzanne Burnett bought the business from her mother in 1984 and has been Managing Director since 1997. Her vision is for the business to become recognised as one of the leading ‘Boutique’ Employment Agencies in Yorkshire. By basing high quality, specialist advisors across Yorkshire, Castle will strategically grow while keeping its head quarters in Scarborough. Suzanne expects the business to double in size again in the next three years.

Mrs Burnett who is the previous President of York and North Yorkshire Chamber and a director of Scarborough Business Ambassadors, says: “There is strong demand across Yorkshire for the high level of care and expertise we provide at Castle. Scarborough has a strong positive affect on my team meaning we are able to offer a high standard of service. It is rare to find high quality specialists offering such local knowledge of the market place.”

Castle is one of the longest standing recruitment agencies in the area and growth in recent years has been driven by Suzanne and her Director, Kerry Hope, who joined Castle in 2014. Kerry has a strong track record of growing recruitment businesses and while working with Suzanne, she has brought fresh ideas to the business. The growth will come from expanding the specialist divisions and appointing highly skilled and experienced specialist recruiters to work across the region. Several new appointments have been made recently to fill these roles.

Mrs Burnett says: “The business was restructured internally in 2015 to create specialist divisions which focus on the specific needs of different role types. Since then we have brought in specialists in Engineering & Manufacturing and HR, and formed two new divisions: Accounts & Finance and Education. It means we are able to respond better to the needs of both customers and candidates and we match people and jobs from Director level appointments to junior staff. Reinvigorating the team has driven growth and success for our clients as well as ourselves.”

Clients include Blue Chip companies and SME’s across Yorkshire and the North, such as McCains, Askham Bryan College, Hare Structural Engineers, The Forestry Commission, Yell, Karro Foods, RaflatacUPM, Benenden Healthcare, many of which have been working with the business for as long as 15 years.

The specialist divisions are: Engineering and Manufacturing, HR, Business Support, Finance and Accounts, Hospitality, Catering & Cleaning, Industrial, Construction & Agriculture and most recently Education.

Mrs Burnett continues: “Our 50th birthday last week was a very special evening for all of the Castle team as we were able to celebrate all that the business has achieved recently and over the past 50 years with our clients, friends and family while raising money for a cause that is close to our hearts. I’m thrilled we are on target to raise £5000 by the end of the year.”

St Catherine’s Hospice has been chosen by the team at Castle as it holds a special place in the heart of Managing Director Suzanne Burnett. It was the place where her father, who died last year, was cared for at the end of his life. Together with the money raised at the 50th party, the Castle team have exceeded their initial goal by raising more than £4000 for the charity so far.

The Castle team have been fundraising since the beginning of this year taking part in monthly events. Some have been tackled together, while others have individually raised money.  In May, members of the team “coloured the coast” taking part in the St Catherine’s very own Colour Run on Filey beach and the team recently embraced the challenge of a ‘dip in the sea’.
