Volunteer on the National Literacy Trust’s Words for Work programme

Words for Work challenges the inequality in employment opportunities for young people . Regardless of background, we aim to provide students with the skills that they need to be a success. 88% of businesses think that school leavers are unprepared for the workplace (research by The British Chamber of Commerce.). At the National Literacy Trust, we believe that a lack of workplace knowledge combined with poor written and oral communication skills lie at the heart of this problem.

Words for Work needs volunteers to attend an Induction Training Session and four interactive workshops from a total of five, working with Key Stage 3 students, which focus on:
• Demonstrating the importance of literacy for success in employment;
• Improving young people’s oral and written communication skills;
• Giving young people confidence in their own abilities and raising career aspirations.
The workshops are led by a teacher and volunteers support all activities.

It is a hugely impactful opportunity for volunteers to address workplace inequality and change the lives and aspirations of young people in Bradford.
