Thirty West Yorkshire business people clipped into their pedals last weekend to tackle the two-day Packetts ‘Tour de Dales’ bike challenge. Funds raised from their efforts go to Bradford charity, ‘One in a Million’ (OIAM).
The charity supports local children and young people living in disadvantaged communities through sport, art and enterprise activities, helping break cycles of deprivation, pointing them towards a brighter future as citizens contributing to the local economy and their community.
And a challenge, even for the fittest, it most certainly is. Led by Marshall Sugden, Managing Director of Saltaire-based insurance brokers, Packetts’, the first stage covered a tortuous 86 mile route through the Dales, from Saltaire to Masham. Along the way, riders climbed over 8,000 feet of gruelling Yorkshire hills.
After some refreshment at T&R Theakston’s world famous brewery and an overnight stop in Masham, the Packett peloton saddled up the following morning to cover a 100 mile route home, ending at ‘OIAMs’ HQ at Valley Parade in Bradford. Now into its fourth year, this year’s ‘Tour de Dales’ has raised over £17,000. It’s all part of the build-up to Packetts’ centenary, next year.
As Marshall Sugden explains, riding the event is a great way of losing some weight. “Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we were able to calculate that each rider burnt off around 6,000 calories on each day. That’s twice the recommended daily average intake for a male and three times more than for a female. It’s equivalent to each rider eating 60 bananas a day! Whilst we ate plenty of them, fortunately our excellent mobile support team had some alternative energy sources for us to consume.”
OIAM executive, Craig McHugh, was another of the riders taking part. “It was a great weekend of camaraderie combined with some seriously hard work. The support we get from Packetts’ is amazing. And it’s great to see the support we get from the Yorkshire business community. In our peloton were accountants, chartered surveyors, MDs of engineering, plastics and building companies along with solicitors and recruiters. Most importantly the money raised will support 21 disadvantaged children through our programmes for a whole year.”
