Career Academies UK is a national charity that links schools and colleges with employers to help prepare young people for the world of work, giving them the confidence and opportunity to engage with employees in a work setting.
Career Academies provide: a structured programme of internships, mentoring by employer volunteers, masterclasses, and workplace visits that give 16-19 year olds the work experience and skills they need to be able to perform more effectively in the wider world.
There are currently around 180 Career Academies running in schools and colleges in the UK.
Career Academies UK is looking to increase its network of businesses in Bradford and recruit mentors at Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College and Oasis Academy Lister Park.
As a mentor you will be expected to meet a student every four to six weeks over a one year period. As part of this mentoring you would be expected to discuss business etiquette and life skills with the student, support their coursework, introduce students to a variety of jobs and career possibilities and help to raise their aspirations.
Career Academies UK also commissioned research into the benefits of working with young people. The key findings are listed below:
- Staff development
- Future recruitment
- Engaging with a hard to reach demographic
- Fresh insight
- Feel good factor and staff moral
