Citizens Advice York is looking for a volunteer Chair of Trustees

Citizens Advice York provides advice to over 5,000 people a year, helping them with some 15,000 different problems; particularly debt, benefits, employment and the family. We have a small paid professional team working alongside and supporting more than 50 volunteers to provide advice at the City Council offices in York, various outreach venues around the city, on the phone and on line.

Citizens Advice York is a member of the national Citizens Advice organisation. It’s a local charity at the heart of our community, entirely funded by grants, donations and fees for contracted services. We have a vacancy for someone to chair the trustee board, when the current Chair’s term of office ends in October 2022. The Trustee Board is responsible for the charity’s overall direction, strategy and performance. It’s a vital role: stimulating, challenging and very worthwhile in many ways.

We are looking for someone with successful leadership experience at a senior level in roles with strategic and operational responsibility, either in the public, charity or private sectors. Someone with a passion and commitment to the provision of advice and Citizens Advice values. Someone with good communication skills and able to build strong, encouraging, supportive and challenging working relationships with people across a wide range of professional, stakeholder and community backgrounds an understanding of the advice sector, its role and how it functions would be helpful but is not essential.

We’re seeking and would welcome applications from people with different work and life experiences and from all the different backgrounds in our community. The Board normally meets six times a year. There are also a few committee meetings, occasional strategy, and a number of other meetings, including with staff and volunteers.

We will arrange to meet those short listed on Wednesday 8th September 2021 (by Zoom if necessary).
